NovAtel® and SEAHORSE Geomatics Technical Paper

Data Results Published in NovAtel® and SEAHORSE Geomatics Technical Paper Validate an Emerging Industry Change

(Calgary, Alberta - July 19, 2013) NovAtel, an OEM provider of high precision Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) positioning products, in partnership with SEAHORSE Geomatics is set to present findings on the viability of Micro Electrical Mechanical System (MEMS) sensors for marine navigation purposes. The companies plan to present their results on September 4, 2013 at the upcoming Oceanology International (Oi) China Show at the INTEX in Shanghai from September 3 - 5, 2013.

The presentation will be based on a technical paper titled, “Tightly-Coupled GNSS/INS System in a Marine Environment Using MEMS Sensors”, jointly authored by Ryan Dixon, P.Eng, Chief Engineer at NovAtel and Mike Mutschler, Senior Hydrographer and Principal, SEAHORSE Geomatics Inc. The paper uses hydrographic data collected by SEAHORSE Geomatics to demonstrate how new GNSS and Inertial technology using a MEMS Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) will now allow smaller size and lower cost technology to benefit the hydrographic survey industry.

Typically IMU sensors have been located in the ship with large offset vectors to the point of interest. Now, the incorporation of MEMS means the smaller sensors can be co-located with the sonar, which ultimately leads to less set-up time, and reduces the potential for error.

“We're encouraged by the positive data we have collected, and are eager to share these results with our colleagues,” says Mutschler. “The innovation is in the small size of the MEMS solution. It's a significant advancement in terms of the size, weight and complexity of the sensor suite which ultimately leads to reduced cost, improved efficiency and better performance for industry users.”

The presentation will be delivered by Mike Mutschler and is scheduled for the afternoon of Wednesday, September 4 as part of the Navigation and Positioning session at the Oi conference. The specific event time and room location is not available yet, but once released, the information will be posted to: www.novatel.com/#events.
